Monuments and Memories: Cebu City, Cebu - Sept 2011

Cebu is the first Spanish settlement. The oldest city and the first capital of the Philippines. The imprint Spanish and Roman Catholic culture is evident in the city. It is also known as the Queen City of the South.

Datu Lapu-Lapu was a ruler of Mactan in Visayas and was the first native to resist Spanish colonization. He is the island's chieftain who defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 in the Battle of Mactan.
This is said to be the place where the Battle of Mactan occurred.

Magellan's Cross is a Christian cross planted by Portuguese and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on March 15, 1521.
Basilica del Santo Niño is the Mother and Head of All Churches in the Philippines. It was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. 
Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral was one of the first churches in the Philippines dedicated to St. Vitales and built near the fort in April of 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Fray Andrés de Urdaneta.

Fuerte de San Pedro is a military defense structure in Cebu. It was built by the Spanish under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi.

 Heritage of Cebu Monument built right on the original Plaza Parian, showcases the significant and symbolic events in the history of Cebu.
